With the arrival of Spring, nature explodes with a resounding return to life after the winter pause. Thanks to longer days and milder weather, our desire to be outdoors is rekindled. Moreover, thanks to numerous holidays and long weekends such as Easter, April 25th, or May 1st, we have time to explore our region!

In this article, we suggest 10 ideas for excursions and trips to be carried out in our region, Lombardy, during this splendid season, Spring.

1.The Sanctuary of San Patrizio in Colzate

Best period: March 17th

With the celebration of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, on March 17th. As well as drinking rivers of Guiness, you can commemorate this occasion by taking an easy excursion to the sanctuary dedicated to him in Colzate, in the middle Val Seriana. This is one of the few places of worship dedicated to the famous Saint in Italy. Built starting from the 14th century and completed only a few centuries later, it stands on a rocky spur overlooking the valley and is surrounded by the woods and meadows of Mount Cavlera. A short route, partly on the road and a path, starting from Vertova, allows you to reach the building. We described it in this article of our blog.

2. The Crocus della Pigolota

Best period: Late March/Early April

Monte Pigolota is an anonymous peak located above Valtora, reaching a maximum altitude of about 1500 meters. It’s worth visiting this elevation because in early spring, its meadows are covered and invaded by Crocus flowers, typical bell-shaped flowers with white, violet, and blue shades. 3. Maslana, the Village of Ibexes

Best period: April

Maslana is a charming alpine village located above Valbondione in Alta Val Seriana, characterized by stone houses and slate roofs. During spring, it’s easy to spot ibexes in this area as they await better weather to return to higher altitudes. Another reason to visit this beautiful village is the opportunity to admire the Serio Waterfalls from a privileged perspective. 4. The Canto Alto

Best period: April

Canto Alto is one of the first elevations encountered in the Bergamo Prealps. Thanks to its moderate altitude and its proximity to the city of Bergamo, it’s an ideal hiking destination throughout the season, especially in spring. From its summit cross, the panorama extends over the entire Lombard plain to the Emilian Apennines. There is also a refuge where you can recharge after the short but intense climb. 5. The Partisans’ Cave in Val Taleggio

Best period: April 25th

To retrace the history and celebration of liberation on foot, this itinerary in Val Taleggio is particularly suitable. The Grotta dei Partigiani (Partisans’ Cave) is a striking rocky cave carved by water erosion, forming a beautiful small waterfall inside. During the spring of 1945, partisans Giulio Bellaviti and Virgilio Arnoldi were killed here by Nazi-fascist forces engaged in a roundup. The cave has been named accordingly since then. 6. The Mincio Cycle Path

Best period: April/May

The Mincio Cycle Path, at the foot of Garda Lake, is an easy route that follows the Mincio River. tarting from Peschiera del Garda, it allows you to reach Mantua, passing through natural landscapes and historic villages of significant landscape and cultural value, like borgo di Valeggio sul Mincio or Borghetto. Along the way it is also possible to stop for a visit to the splendid Sigurtà Park, which in this season reaches the peak of its flowering season. 7. The Oglio Cycle Path

Best period: April/May

Moving to another lake, we suggest the charming cycle path that follows the Oglio River. In particular, the stretch from Darfo to Iseo along Lake Iseo offers splendid perspectives of Monte Isola and is well-suited for spring. 8. Monte Sighignola

Best period: April/May

Mount Sighignola, in the Val d’Intelvi near Como, is rightfully nicknamed “The Balcony of Italy.” It is in fact a panoramic mountain on the border between Lombardy and Switzerland, Mount Sighignola, in the Val d’Intelvi near Como, is rightfully nicknamed “The Balcony of Italy.” On the clearest days, such as those usually found in spring, the gaze is lost as far as the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa. 9. The Ponale path

Best period: May

We move to Garda Lake to suggest this spectacular route. Located on the border between Trentino and Lombardy, the Ponale path is an ancient road carved into the rock that connected Lake Garda with Lake Ledro. After being closed for 20 years, it has been rehabilitated and transformed into a cycle and pedestrian path of great charm, offering magnificent views overlooking Lake Garda. 10. The Tracciolino trail

Best period: May

Finally, we close this roundup with the highest altitude route among those suggested, and therefore to be done in spring, as in the heart of May. The Tracciolino trail is a panoramic route carved out of the mountain which, through spectacular tunnels and passages dug into the rock, connects two valleys and their dams: the Codera valley and the Ratti valley, above the lake of Novate Mezzola.
