The Balcony of Italy.
In this article we describe the climb to Monte Sighignola, in the Como Val d’Intelvi. It is a panoramic mountain on the border between Lombardy and Switzerland, which has rightly earned the nickname of “The Balcony of Italy”, with magnificent views of Como lake, Lugano lake, and the Alps. On clear days the view stretches as far as the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa.
The summit of Sighignola can be reached by car or by bike, by taking the historic carriageway that starts from Lanzo. However, we will describe the easy path for hiking up the mountain. A small physical effort makes the panorama even more appreciated!
We reach the village of Lanzo d’Intelvi and from here we climb to reach the Ristorante La Baita, where we leave the car. Large signs indicate our easy trail, which leads into a dense forest. The path, which takes about 20 minutes, leads us to the terrace on top of the mountain, where there are also picnic areas, from where we can enjoy a fantastic panorama.
The return is on the same path taken on the way up or via the carriageway. For the more fit, there is also the possibility of reaching the summit directly from Lanzo d’Intelvi, following the CAI trail marker. In this case, the travel time increases to about 1 hour and 40 minutes.
This hike does not present particular difficulties and is suitable for everyone, adults and children.
Always carefully plan your trips, choosing the appropriate material and equipment and verifying the itinerary before embarking on it.
