Excursion to the Antonio Curò refuge

Discover with us the itinerary for the excursion to the Antonio Curò Refuge in the upper Seriana Valley

Among the most historic in the Bergamo area, opened as far back as 1886, the Antonio Curò refuge is located above Val Bondione, in the Upper Seriana Valley, at an altitude of about 1915 meters. It owes its name to Engineer Curò, then president of the CAI of Bergamo. In addition to the summer building, a high-quality hostel has recently been built. In this article we see the description of the itinerary that leads, starting from the town of Valbondione, to reach this refuge.

TRIP SUMMARY

DIFFICULTY: moderate

TOTAL DIFFERENCE IN HEIGHT: about 950 meters

MAX ALTITUDE: about 1915mt

Type: A/R

DURATION: 3.0h one way

DEPARTURE: Valbondione (BG)

ARRIVAL: Rifugio Curò (BG)

CAI TRAIL SIGN: 305

The departure is from Valbondione, in the locality of Grumetti, where you can leave your car. If the spaces are already all occupied, we will have to park further downstream, near the large parking lot of the Palazzetto dello Sport. Remember, in order not to incur fines, to buy the scratch card from the authorized merchants in the town.

The path starts immediately behind the chapel. It first enters the cool and pleasant deciduous forest but once it reaches the imposing rock walls, it climbs with a steeper slope along the side of the mountain. Despite this, the path remains wide and easy throughout the route, with splendid and evocative panoramic views of the valley floor.

the triple jump of the Serio Waterfalls

Once you reach the refuge, the panorama opens up. In front of us is the famous Barbellino lake, closed by the dam that, following the official release calendar, generates the famous Serio waterfalls. The spectacle of the triple jump of water of over 300 meters in height attracts thousands of visitors and in these days it will be good to be patient and leave well in advance, to avoid the inevitable crowd.

Lake Barbellino

In addition to the lake and the waterfalls, near the refuge it is possible to admire the famous “sword in the stone”, a work created by Matteo Rodari, gamekeeper of the Orobie Park, in 2016.

Finally, the Curò refuge is the gateway to numerous valuable excursions, such as Pizzo Recastello, Pizzo Strinato or the Coca refuge. The less trained can stop along the shores of the artificial lake of Barbellino or continue for less than an hour until they reach the waters of the natural one.

The refuge boasts 92 beds and excellent traditional cuisine.

The return takes place along the same route as the outward journey.

The Sword in the Stone

The itinerary is easy and within everyone’s reach, with a minimum of training. You can find the interactive map of the route, complete with elevation profile and downloadable GPS track, at this link.

Always carefully plan your trips, choosing the appropriate material and equipment and verifying the itinerary before embarking on it.
