Discover with us the itinerary for the excursion to the Laghi Gemelli Refuge, in the upper Brembana Valley
The Laghi Gemelli Refuge is located at an altitude of 1968 meters, in the municipality of Branzi, in the upper Brembana Valley. Owned by the CAI of Bergamo, the first building dates back to 1900, but was destroyed during the Second World War. The current building was inaugurated in 1948. It owes its name to the artificial lake of the same name along which it stands.
In addition to the basin of the twin lakes, it is surrounded by numerous other artificial lakes, such as Lake Marcio, Lake Casere, Lake Colombo and Lake Becco. In this article we are going to describe the itinerary that leads to the refuge starting from Carona.

TRIP SUMMARY
DIFFICULTY: moderate
TOTAL ELEVATION GAIN: about 895 meters
MAX ALTITUDE: 1968 mt
Type: A/R
DURATION: 3.5h one way
DEPARTURE: Carona (BG)
ARRIVAL: Rifugio Laghi Gemelli (BG)
CAI TRAIL SIGN: 221
The departure is from Carona. We leave the car in one of the many parking lots in the village, remembering to buy one of the scratch cards in advance from the authorized merchants in the village.
We then move on foot to the left bank of Lake Carona, from where the actual path starts. Obvious signs indicate our destination. We take the CAI 211 trail sign that we will keep until we arrive at the refuge.
From here the path climbs into the woods, with steep slopes. We continue following the hairpin bends and gaining altitude to a plateau, where we can catch our breath.

Shortly after, the path meets a crossroads, it is the 213, which leads to the Calvi Refuge. We ignore it, staying on the 211 and continuing with marked slopes.
We finally reach Lake Marcio, and its dam. Here the path flattens out and we have the opportunity to skirt the lake and admire its shores. Our path then meets the CAI 250, which climbs to Lake Becco and the 212, coming from Branzi. Continuing slightly downhill, we skirt Lake Casere from above. We pass over a small bridge and continue uphill again, for the last stretch of the path that will finally lead us to reach the Laghi Gemelli Refuge.

From the refuge you can reach interesting peaks, such as Pizzo del Becco, Monte Cabianca, Monte Tonale or Pizzo Farno, or opt for less demanding excursions such as the tour of the lakes. Finally, it is also possible to reach the Calvi and Longo refuges.
The refuge boasts 80 beds and excellent home cooking.
The return takes place along the same route as the outward journey.

The itinerary is technically easy but requires a minimum of training. You can find the interactive map of the route, complete with elevation profile and downloadable GPS track, at this link.
Always carefully plan your trips, choosing the appropriate material and equipment and verifying the itinerary before embarking on it.
