A combination of human-made structures and nature! Discover with us the itinerary for the hike to the Cancano lakes
In this article, we describe the easy hike to the Cancano lakes. We are in Val di Dentro, in the upper Valtellina, and we will visit the artificial Cancano lakes, created for electricity production in the post-World War I period. This hike offers truly breathtaking views and landscapes.
We take the road that connects Bormio to Livigno, then turn off near the town of Premadio, and follow the signs for the Fraele Pass and its towers. We follow this scenic road until we reach these ancient fortifications, which are worth a short visit. You can decide to leave your car here and walk to the lakes, or continue and park between the Palazzina A2A and the Monte Scale Refuge, at a cost of 5 euros.
Our suggestion is to now take the trail that goes around the first lake. After crossing the first dam and reaching the Solena Refuge on an easy dirt road, we then follow the trail that runs along the lake to the Val di Fraele Refuge. From there, you can cross the dam and complete the loop, or if you still have energy, continue and hike around the second lake as well.
Along the way, there are also numerous picnic areas equipped for a rest or simply to take a break and enjoy the scenery.
This excursion does not present technical difficulties and is suitable for both adults and children.
You can find the interactive map of the route, complete with altitude and downloadable GPS track, at this link.
Always organize your trips with care, choose appropriate equipment, and verify the itinerary before embarking on it.
