The waterfalls that even impressed Leonardo da Vinci! Discover with us the itinerary for the hike to the Acquafraggia waterfalls.
The Acquafraggia Waterfalls are a spectacular waterfall located in Valchiavenna. We are in Borgonuovo di Piuro, where we can already admire this incredible double 170-meter high waterfall from the road. They are so enchanting that they even enchanted Leonardo da Vinci, who will mention them in his “Codex Atlanticus”. The waterfalls take their name from the Latin “Acqua Fracta”, being divided and therefore “fracte” into multiple jumps.
Visiting them is very easy. We reached Borgonuovo di Piuro by car and parked in the dedicated parking lot. We then walk along the path that runs alongside the stream, following the clear indications. In a short time, we find ourselves in front of them and can observe them from below.
Now, from the waterfalls, we turn right and follow the path that leads to an asphalted road, which we follow to an explanatory panel. From here, we take the path on the left with stone steps. By following it, we will encounter a first panoramic terrace, and then, even more spectacular, a second one, from which we can admire the entire waterfall from above.
Having resumed our journey, we cross the stream on a rope bridge and then begin our descent, which will take us to the church of San Abbondio via a steep stepped path, and from there, in a short time, to our car park.
The hike does not present technical difficulties, and with a little more patience, can also be traveled by families with small children.
