Founded in a strategic position on the hills that overlook the plains, it is divided between the Upper City, nestled on the hills, and the lower part that stretches toward the plains.

The “Città Alta” (Upper City) of Bergamo, the historic and original nucleus of the city, is a gem of medieval architecture that has been excellently preserved, with its imposing Venetian walls now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Bergamo Bassa (Lower Bergamo) is a dynamic and elegant city, with streets full of shops, cafes, and offices.

Its province stretches from the Orobie Alps, whose peaks exceed 3,000 meters, to the medieval villages in the plain, passing through the two main valleys, named after the rivers that flow through them, the Brembo and the Serio. Along the eastern border, you find Lake Iseo, with the beautiful Montisola in its center.

With this article, we hope to assist you by suggesting 7 activities to enjoy during your summer vacation in Bergamo.

A Tour of Bergamo Alta

A day on Iseo Lake

An Hike in Brembana Valley

An E-bike Tour in Val Seriana

A Kayak Trip on One of Bergamo’s Lakes

Rafting, Hydrospeed, Canyoning, and River Trekking

A Visit to the Castles of Lower Bergamasca

1. A Tour of Bergamo Alta

The Città Alta of Bergamo, the city’s original core, is an architectural gem. Nestled in a dominant position on the hills overlooking the Lombard plain, it is surrounded by a massive wall system built by the Republic of Venice to protect its domains from the rival Milan. Now that the military purpose is no longer necessary, the Venetian walls have also been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Lake the funicular from Bergamo Bassa, and once you reach the upper station, get lost among the charming glimpses of Corsarola, the main street filled with shops and restaurants, and the narrow and fascinating side streets.

Arriving at Piazza Vecchia, the main square, admire the Angelo Maj Library, the Palazzo della Ragione, and the Palazzo del Podestà. Climb the Campanone, the ancient bell tower, for a breathtaking view, then move to the adjacent Piazza del Duomo, where you can visit the Colleoni Chapel, the tomb of the Bergamasque condottiero and mercenary leader, and the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, probably the most representative church of Bergamo.

To end your tour, don’t miss the climb to the Rocca and its park, before walking along at least part of the Venetian walls. On clear days, the panorama stretches from Milan to Franciacorta, with the Apennines forming the backdrop.

If you still have time, take the second funicular from Colle Aperto and reach San Vigilio and its splendid castle.

In a BergamoXP style, sporty and active, we believe the best way to visit Bergamo Alta and its hills is by renting an electric bike (or a regular one if you’re fit) to explore not only the historic part of the city but also its green hills and side valleys, such as the beautiful Val d’Astino.

Bergamo Alta by E-bike

2. A day on Iseo Lake

Less known and prestigious than the larger Lake Garda or Lake Como, Lake Iseo is a pearl of beauty. Surrounded by the mountains of the Lombard Pre-Alps, it marks the border between the provinces of Bergamo and Brescia. Expansive green views and wide open spaces await you, surrounded by a calm and relaxed atmosphere.

The Sebino is famous for hosting Monteisola, the largest lake island in Italy, which is definitely worth a visit. If you have limited time, we suggest taking the ferry and dedicating it to walking along its peaceful shores overlooking the lake.

If you have more time, head to Lovere, a romantic town located on the northern part of the lake, and on the way, stop to admire the impressive bay of the Bogn di Riva di Solto, with its gorge.

we’ve discussed the most interesting things to see on Lake Iseo in a dedicated article.

Our final suggestion is to admire Lake Iseo from a kayak, for a new and unusual perspective.

Monteisola and Iseo Lake

3. An Hike in Brembana Valley

The green and wild Val Brembana is an excellent destination for hiking enthusiasts, ideal for a day trek to admire the majesty of the Orobie Alps. The numerous peaks and refuges in this valley offer a variety of options.

Those who are less fit can opt for an easy walk along the Brembo bike path. Alternatively, you can choose to reach one of the refuges, such as Longo or Calvi. Finally, the more experienced can tackle the summit of Monte Aga or even Pizzo del Diavolo di Tenda, the highest peak in the valley.

We have gathered the top 10 hikes in Val Brembana in this dedicated article. If you plan to spend more time in this valley, we’ve suggested 6 things to do in Val Brembana in another dedicated article.

Hiking in Brembana Valley

4. An E-bike Tour in Val Seriana

al Seriana, the other main valley in Bergamo, is perfect for exploration by e-bike. For everyone, the 30 km bike path that runs from Ranica to Clusone is an ideal option for families or beginners. Those with a bit more experience can choose the route that starts at the Presolana Pass and reaches the Salto degli Sposi area before reaching Monte Alto and the Magnolini Refuge. Alternatively, you can pedal through villages and cornfields on the trails of the Clusone plateau.

For the more experienced, there’s no shortage of options, such as climbing one of the many trails that lead to the summit of Monte Misma, the technical trails of Colle Maresana, or the perimeter of Monte Farno.

There’s much more to see in Val Seriana. If you have more time, you can get inspiration for your vacation in this article dedicated to the 5 things to do in Val Seriana in summer.

Additionally, Val Seriana also has numerous hiking trails, and we’ve gathered the most interesting ones in this article about the 10 best hikes in Val Seriana.

E-bike in Val Seriana

5. A Kayak Trip on One of Bergamo’s Lakes

One of the best and most fascinating ways to explore the area is by kayak. This particular craft allows you to enjoy the views from a unique perspective and reach points that would otherwise be inaccessible on land.

Bergamo boasts a lake entirely within its province, the small but characteristic and very green Endine Lake. Always calm and peaceful, it’s perfect for a family kayak outing.

Alternatively, you can paddle on Lake Iseo to admire Monteisola. For the more experienced, it’s even possible to circle the entire lake in a day.

Though not a lake, the Adda River flows peacefully and slowly in its section below Lake Como, marking the border between the provinces of Bergamo and Lecco. Meanders, a rich ecosystem, and unexpectedly green panoramas await those eager to try this easy outing.

We’ve discussed the most interesting kayaking routes in Lombardy in this article.

kayak on Endine lake

6. Rafting, Hydrospeed, Canyoning and River Trekking

If you’re looking for adrenaline and intense emotions, look no further. In the months of April, May, and June, when the snowmelt swells the Brembo River, you can ride its powerful rapids on a rafting boat or even swim through them with hydrospeed!

When the snow is gone, unfortunately, the river recedes, and these activities are no longer possible. But don’t worry. It’s time for canyoning and river trekking, where you can quench your thirst for adventure by exploring gorges and streams, diving into crystal-clear pools, and sliding down natural rock water slides.

Rafting on Brembo River

7. A Visit to the Castles of Lower Bergamasca

The area of the province that extends into the plains is known as the Lower Bergamasca. Here, picturesque historic villages like Romano di Lombardia, Caravaggio, and Cologno al Serio, along with numerous castles such as those of Cavenago, Malpaga, or Pagazzano, can be found.

Tutta la pianura, d’estate, è inoltre interessata da numerose feste, sagre ed eventi.
